(5321) Rankin, William.  Sergeant.  Co.H, 84 NY (also known as 14th Brooklyn).  Enlisted 18 Apr, 1861 at Brooklyn.  Killed in battle 8 May, 1864, while acting as standard bearer at Spotsylvania/ Laurel Hill battlefield.  Father James and brothers Edwin and James also served in army.  Many letters in pension file (NARA).  Also sited in “The History of the Fighting Fourteenth”, pg. 120: [in speaking of Sgt. Rankin’s death at the Battle of Spotslyvania Court House:] “It was in this fight, in the right wing of the regiment, that Sergeant Rankin was killed.  This comrade was beloved by the whole regiment. He was a worthy type of brave Union soldier and a representative member of the Fourteenth.  He had served with the regiment through all the battles it had participated in and his record had won him the deep respect of all the officers and the men.  When the Grand Army of the Republic [a fraternal organization of Union veterans] came into existence, the first post was named in honor of Sergeant Rankin and became known as the ‘Mother of Posts’ in Brooklyn.” Rankin was originally buried at McCoull's Farm, Spotsylvania  (ROH).

(4045) Reese, James M.  Private.  Co.K, 2 MI.  Age 18.  Enlisted 10 May, 1861 at Kalamazoo for three years and mustered in 25 May, 1861.  Wounded in action at Knoxville, TN 24 Nov, 1863.  Re-enlisted 31 Dec, 1863 at Blain's Cross Roads, TN, and mustered in 1 Jan, 1864.  Killed in action at the Wilderness 6 May, 1864 (SR).  Originally buried at Wilderness Battlefield, Spotsylvania (ROH).

(5573) Reeves, Willard.  Private. 4 ME.  There is a great deal of controversy over when and where Reeves died.  His children contend that he committed suicide because he "went insane due to time spent in Libby Prison," and that he was paroled "both physically and mentally sick."  In a letter dated 26 Jul, 1898, the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Pensions state he committed suicide in Dec 1862, while the evidence in the pension file show his date of death as 4 Dec, 1863. Other letters in the file show that he died 14 Feb, 1863 in Newcastle, ME.  He was last shown present with his company 30 Jun, 1862, but there are also files which state he never enlisted, never mustered, and not on rolls (NARA).  Originally buried at Hansborough's Farm, Stafford (ROH).

Mustered into Co.K or Co.C as a First Lieutenant 1 May, 1864.  Wounded at Petersburg by the explosion of a mine 30 Jul, 1864, resulting in  the loss of  his left hand, part of his left arm, and part of his left hip was shot away.  He was discharged by reason of his wounds 30 Jul, 1864.  Appointed First Lieutenant of 16 Volunteer Reserve Corps 13 Mar, 1865.  Died 25 Mar, 1867 of consumption.
