Served as 2nd Lt. then 1st Lt.  Wounded in action at Manassa. 30 Aug. 1862.  Capt. in 1863.   Wounded in abdomen and received Medal of Honor for distinguished gallantry in action at Cold Harbor 1 June, 1864.  Appointed to be General by brevet for gallant and meritorious services in the Battle of Magnolia Swamp to date from 13 March, 1865. Died 25 October, 1900 (Reg). Has several letters at Chatham  in Volume 52.  One paper by Hill is titled "The Last Charge at Fredericksburg.”

It is believed that he was originally buried at Sanford’s Farm.
