(540)    Pierce, Jerome.  Corporal.  Co.H, 36 MA. Age 31.  Occ: Mechanic.  Res: Orange.  Enlisted 4 Aug., 1862 and mustered in 27 Aug., 1862.  Killed 12 May, 1864 at the battle of the Bloody Angle at Spotsylvania.  After his death, his family sent $100 to the Supt. of the Cemetery and asked him to decorate the grave regularly.  The Supt. opened an account in the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Fredericksburg.  The Supt. enlisted the help of his own family to keep the grave decorated.  Alice Heflin Abernathy continued to do as her grandfather in decorating the grave. The original account is still in a local bank and shows small withdrawals over the years. The balance now stands at $173. Her 11 year old grandnephew assumed the decorating of the grave. He was mortally wounded May 13, 1864 by the bursting of a shell at Spotsylvania.  Both his legs were amputated-Reg.  Originally buried at Harris' Farm, Spotsylvania Co., VA (ROH).

Muster rolls state he died 20 May, 1865 at a field hospital of disease (NARA), while SR state he died 12 May, 1865 at Regimental hospital, 3rd Div. 9th Corps, of inflamation of the stomach.  FVC has date of death as 11 May, 1865.  Originally buried in Stafford Co. (ROH).
